MLB Team Values 2011

On my 10 am break this morning I stumbled upon a list on SI.com of the values of all 30 MLB teams.  I believe this list mirrors Forbes list published last week on 3/23/11.  Here is the list from most valuable to least:

1. Yankees $1.7 Billion           11. Cardinals $518 Million      21. Tigers $385 Million
2. Red Sox $912 Million         12. Twins $490 Million           22. Brewers $376 Million
3. Dodgers $800 Million         13. Braves $482 Million          23. Reds $375 Million
4. Cubs $773 Million              14. Astros $474 Million          24. Marlins $360 Million
5. Mets $747 Million              15. Mariners $449 Million       25. Indians $353 Million
6. Phillies $609 Million           16. Nationals $417 Million       26. Royals $351 Million
7. Giants $563 Million            17. Rockies $414 Million         27. Blue Jays $337 Million
8. Rangers $561 Million         18.Orioles $411 Million           28. Rays $331 Million
9. Angels $554 Million           19. Padres $406 Million           29. Athletics $307 Million
10. White Sox $526 Million   20. Diamondbacks $396 Million 30. Pirates $304 Million.

A few things to point out.

1. The Mets worth $747 million are in debt thanks in part to Bernie Madoff for around $450 million.
2. The only MLB Canadian team, the Blue Jays, are worth more in Canadian money then they are in US Dollars.  $307 Million USD / $361 Million CAN.
3. Before taxes the state workers in New York that just won the lottery for $319 million could buy either the Athletics or the Pirates.  The MLB may give away the Pirates though.
4. Speaking of the Pirates, they are worth a third of what the Steelers are worth.  Pirates $307 million / Steelers $996 million.
5. The Yankees (Highest valued team) are worth exactly 1.396 billion dollars more then the Pirates (lowest valued team).
6. The Yankees valued at $1.7 billion are worth more then the lowest 5 valued teams combined (1.630 billion total).

I asked myself does winning correlate with value?  Here's what I found out.  Of the top ten valued franchises, there were a combined 43 playoff appearances in the last 10 years.  There were also 8 world series rings between them in that same time period.

2000 Yankees
2001 Diamondbacks
2002 Angels
2003 Marlins
2004 Red Sox
2005 White Sox
2006 Cardinals
2007 Red Sox
2008 PHILLIES
2009 Yankees
2010 Giants.

Besides the 2001 hiccup of the Diamondbacks you have to go back to 1993 to find the last time a bottom tier team won the world series, Blue Jays over the Phillies.  I still say it was a good pitch, Joe Carter could not hit that ball 9 times out of 10 swings.
